March 31, 2002, Fairfax, VA - Calligrapher Michael Noyes was selected from a number of artists to create the 2002 White House Easter Egg representing the State of Virginia. The egg is decorated with a painting of the Pentagon and a ragged black hole in the side with an American flag hanging from the roof. The Virginia egg, together with eggs from all the other states and the District of Columbia, may be seen on the White House web site.

The White House Easter Egg Collection has been coordinated by the American Egg Board since 1994, and is displayed in the White House each Easter in conjunction with the White House Easter Egg Roll, a tradition since 1878.

Cecilia Glembocki, of the Virginia Egg Council, first met Michael Noyes in September 2001 when she commissioned him to create a calligraphy design of "Amazing Grace," by John Newton. Her daughter Cathy, and son-in-law Guy Langford, narrowly escaped from the World Trade Center area on September 11, just as Cathy went into labor for the birth of their first child. At three AM on September 12, Cathy gave birth to a baby girl, whom they named Grace. She said to her mother, "The only thing I want for Christmas are the words to 'Amazing Grace' and my baby's name, Grace, to hang on a wall in our home."

"It was obvious to me," says Michael, "that this year's Easter egg from Virginia must commemorate the Pentagon attack, particularly since the whole idea of Easter is resurrection and new life."
