Text:

May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.

Artist’s Comments:

The text is from a letter which George Washington wrote in 1790 to the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island. President Washington celebrates the newly formed United States as a model of government which affirms the natural rights and dignity of all its citizens. The vine and fig tree reference is from Micah 4:4.
